Introduction, Recommendations and Barrier Free Functions
This building, since constructed as ‘Port Opening Memorial Yokohama Hall’ through the citizens’ donation in 1917 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Yokohama port, has been loved by many citizens as one of the signature buildings of the city.
It’s been used as a public hall since 1959 under the name ‘Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall’, and it was designated as an Important Cultural Property in 1989. Anyone can come and see the communal areas such as the corridors, lobby, and archive rooms except the main hall and conference rooms. There was stained glass in the building made by Unosawa Group Stained Glass Factory, which was burned down in the Kanto Great Fire, but it was later restored. It’s a precious one as an extremely valuable work in the history of stained glass in Japan.
Also, the symbol of Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall, the clocktower of 36 metres high is nicknamed Jack, and is loved as one of the Yokohama Three Towers, together with King: Kanagawa Prefectural Office, and Queen: Yokohama Customs.
There’s a staircase at the main entrance, but wheelchair users can enter with the elevator. As you go in through the entrance for the elevator located at the opposite of the main entrance, there’s an elevator in front of the courtyard. This will take you to the first and second floors. There is an accessible toilet on each floor, which comes with a baby seat.
A rental wheelchair is available.
